چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary cementing techniques in total hip arthroplasty include the use of a cement restrictor to occlude the intramedullary canal. In the 80 ́s occlusion of the distal intramedullary canal was done with a bone plug or by sealing with bone cement. Today, with the evolvement of biomaterials in Orthopaedic surgery numerous plug designs and materials (non-resorbable, resorbable) are available. Regardless of design, however, intramedullary cement leakage and plug migration during cement and stem insertion should not occur to ensure adequate intramedullary pressures. As there are many different designs currently available it was the aim of our study to compare the stability of eight different systems (Fig. 1) with regard to biomechanical stability (distal motion of plug) and canal occlusion during standardized cement pressurization.

An in Vitro Comparative Study of the Performance of Different Commercially Available Intramedullary Femoral Plugs during Total Hip Replacement

Distal flow of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement during insertion of the femoral implant results in reduced pressure and cement-bone interdigitation (Markolf, Amstutz, 1976). Insertion of femoral cement plugs in the intramedullary canal to prevent distal flow of PMMA cement in total hip replacement during cementing of femoral prostheses is well accepted and has become current practice (...

Technique for a composite femoral intramedullary plug in cemented hip arthroplasty.

A brief technique to place a cement plug on top of a polyethylene is presented. This technique has helped the authors obtain better cement mantles when they are plugging the canal in total hip replacement.

Cement (PMMA) Extrusion into Femoral Nutrient Vessels during Total Hip Arthroplasty: Case Series

Current concepts in cement Total Hip Arthroplasty advocates optimization of mechanical interlock of cement (PMMA) with trabecular bone. The Third generation cementing technique has been developed to achieve this with the use of cement gun retrograde cementing within the proximal femur and pressurization of the cement with wedge or surgeon’s thumb. The forces generated by cement compression duri...

Mating of a PROSTALAC spacer with an intramedullary nail for reconstruction of an infected interprosthetic femoral shaft fracture: a case report.

Reconstruction for concurrent infection of an ipsilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a challenge. We report a 2-stage reconstruction of a THA for chronic infection of both the THA and TKA with severe femoral bone loss secondary to interprosthetic fractures. The reconstruction involved using a custom-made, temporary, antibiotic-impregnated PROSTALAC spacer ...
